Alumni couple includes university in will because “the world needs Brandeis”

Lewis '80, P'16 and Denise Silber '84, P'16 BrooksIn May 1983, Lewis Brooks ’80, P’16, returned to campus to share some slideshows for the class of 1978’s 5th Reunion and the class of 1983’s senior week. An avid photographer, Lewis was already renowned for tugging at the heartstrings of fellow alumni with images of their years at Brandeiss. There was just one problem: He forgot an extension cord. Slightly panicked, he ran to the nearest office and asked Denise Silber ’84, P’16, then a rising senior leading ProBo (Programming Board), the organization that brought entertainment to campus, if she could help.

“Had I been prepared that day, my life would have been very different,” laughs Lewis.

The two, who got engaged in the Usdan Student Center and were married in the Berlin Chapel, proudly sent their daughter, Hannah ’16, to follow in their footsteps. They have been lifelong volunteers—as regional chairs and members of the Alumni Board and reunion committees. Lewis is now a university trustee.

Their personal story aside, Denise and Lewis still revere the education that they received. Denise, who received a scholarship said, “We’ve always had the mindset that because Brandeis gave us so much, we should give back.” Lewis agrees. “Since 1948, the university has been agile, responding to the changing world to give students an incredible education and producing real leaders.”

“Brandeis changed the trajectory of both of our lives; it’s one of the greatest gifts we’ve ever received,” said Denise. Lewis added, “When we thought about leaving our mark on the world, a bequest to Brandeis was an easy decision.”
